Glenwood Canyon
Emergency Repair

On July 29, 2021 heavy rains set in over the burn scar of the Grizzly Creek Fire in Colorado’s famous Glenwood Canyon causing massive mudslides to over take the entire length of the canyon’s 17-miles.  CDOT contracted with Lawrence Construction to perform emergency repairs which began with removing debris fields ranging from 20 to 150 feet wide and up to 12 feet deep so the extent of the damage could be evaluated.  Lawrence then repaired the parapet structure, retaining walls, the roadway and bike path.   Drainage culverts and roadway ditches  were cleaned and repaired to reestablish drainage and habitat within the watershed.  The final aspect of the work involved the restoration of the Colorado River where slide material poured over disrupting the natural flow.  Lawrence restored the river to its natural grade and partnered with state wildlife personnel to strategically place tree trucks, boulders and other natural material to restore the habitat.
